We all get those urges late at night. You are curled up on the couch with your favorite book or movie and instinctively your hand feels like it should be feeding your mouth with tasty snacks. The trick is to have something healthy on hand to make it easy for you to make the right choice.

By planning your snacks in advance you eliminate bad choices. We also suggest portioning out your snacks. If you’re making a fruit salad portion out a small bowl for yourself rather than sitting in front of the huge bowl and picking. If something’s directly in front of us we tend to pick at it and it more.

Here are some simple snacking suggestions to stave off those late night cravings:

Veggies and dip
Have some cut up veggies and a healthy low fat dip ready to go at anytime. They’re great for yourself or if unexpected guests show up. Remember to keep the dip healthy though. Try making a simple hummus instead of a sour cream or mayonnaise dip. Or at least be sure to use low fat sour cream and mayo and don’t over do the dipping.

Popcorn
Popcorn is a great healthy snack option the problem most people have is they just eat too much of it! So remember to control your portion sizes!

Yogurt & Fruit
Yogurt is a great healthy snack filled with good bacteria. For a change add some extra berries or use your yogurt as a smart choice fruit dip.

Try a smoothies
Smoothies are the perfect fix to fill those ice cream cravings. Have some frozen fruit on hand for whenever you get the craving. Blend with water until creamy and serve.

Stay away from pop and sugar filled drinks
Water is always the best choice to quench your thirst. If you’re looking to change that up we recommend fruit juices made with real fruit or if you want something warm try a soothing cup of green tea.

Enjoy you snacks, just remember to keep them reasonable and to make smart choices.
